What about interior design?
The broad goal for an design team on any given design project is to find the best possible solution to any given problem. For interior architecture and design, this can be applied to either a “new build” or remodel project. Design is human centered and appeals to all the senses. It begins with the problem that needs to be solved for the client and evolves into a creative, thoughtful and collaborative effort. Design is everywhere you look… nature, humanity, product, homes and business. Based on that statement alone, we can safely say that design has probably been around for millions of years. And over time, design has become more innovative with the help of technology and the need for more creative solutions.
Finding the solution to a problem involves a Design Process. This creative process can be applied to designing anything….clothes, computers, phones, cars, homes, businesses and more. Everything around you has been designed by someone and has evolved into what it is today. Interior Designers focus on the human scale and use of the space they are designing. By a process of design which includes, information gathering, concept development, and schematic development, it leads to the success of thorough solution to a developed design. While a creative thought process deserves great attention, keen analytical and critical thinking skills and an understanding of form and function are equally relevant to the success of a design. And let us not exclude the collaborative efforts between interior design professionals and our trade partners with specific skill sets that create the collaborative synergy needed for a successful design outcome.
Design may look linear through the lens of our client or general population, but the crazy thing is, design itself is not a linear process. Design is a discipline, a way of thinking multi-dimensionally and takes time. It is a network of interconnections where one thing affects the next. “Out of the box” thinking and brainstorming are an integral part of this process. It’s taking an inspirational or nostalgic moment or object from a client and dissecting the “why” behind it that allows a world of design possibilities to unfold. This ebbs and flows, while continuing to move toward a solution, until the final design is completed. So when we state “no project should look like the next”, this is why. Our decisions, our thoughts, our sourcing, our transition details point back to what should create a mirrored or storied project that is an extension of our clients.
Interior Design affects the health of a home or business and the way we function within that space. It can effectively help create a desirable and intuitive commercial atmosphere and generate profits for businesses by way of creating a space that is not only operationally functional, but also aesthetically pleasing for both the employees and customers. Room adjacencies within the floor plan exploration, studying circulation space that is intertwined within furniture plans, form, materiality, textures, patterns natural and faux lighting, and maintenance, all play a critical role in how we cohabitate within that space and how the home reflects our lifestyle.
The joy of working with our clients is found not only in designing their business or home but also building relationships and educating them throughout the design process. While our commercial clients find value in design services by focusing on the benefits and outcomes, such as increased customer loyalty, brand identification, competitive advantage, and operational efficiency, our residential clients experience a more personal design experience which adds value to the quality, aesthetic and function of their home.
